The Air Race 1 World Cup will hold its first event in Monastir, Tunisia, on 7th June 2015. This will also be the first-ever formula one air race on the continent of Africa. The event will take place at the Monastir Habib Bourguiba International Airport situated between the popular Mediterranean tourist resort cities of Monastir and Sousse. The event will be hosted by TAV Tunisie, an affiliate of TAV Airports, one of the world’s leading airport operators.
The series will then return to the site of its launch last year in Lleida, Catalunya, a scenic destination in the north east of Spain at the foot of the Pyrenees Mountains. The Lleida-Alguaire Airport, operated by Aeroports de Catalunya, will host the Air Race 1 World Cup on 28th June 2015 under the patronage of the governments of Catalunya and Lleida.
The Air Race 1 World Cup will end its 2015 season at the famous Reno Air Races in Reno, Nevada USA, where the Reno Air Racing Association (RARA) will host its 52nd annual event in which six different classes of air race, including the formula one class, will hold their final contests on 20th September 2015. The hugely popular Reno Air Races will entertain an audience of 200,000 devoted fans.
Jeff Zaltman, CEO of Air Race 1, said: “It is a great thrill to see the rapid expansion of our sport to such far and illustrious reaches. The extraordinary destinations that the Air Race 1 World Cup selected to host its events this year have met all of our highest criteria and we are proud to be working with each of them. The beautiful locations and their excellent airports will help elevate the profile of our sport. In turn, we offer our hosts a unique and noteworthy platform upon which to promote themselves.”
Mr Farre, Lleida Delegate to the Catalan Government, stated: “Lleida is delighted to build upon the success of our partnership with Air Race 1 last year after our historic inauguration of the series. Lleida is a fast growing tourist destination offering a range of year-round activities and scenic landscape – and nothing showcases this better than a dynamic outdoor motorsport like the Air Race 1 World Cup.”
Mr Anis Jmour, General Manager of Monastir Airport, commented: “Monastir Airport has been serving its community for decades as a major gateway to Tunisia and we wish to celebrate our airport’s legacy and our region’s heritage as a dynamic and thriving tourist destination by attracting this prestigious air race to our world-class facility. We are eager to participate and showcase our capabilities to the world.”
Mike Major, CEO of RARA, said: “The Reno Air Races has long been a cornerstone of the sport of air racing, but we are not resting on our laurels and many new innovations are planned. So the timing is perfect for us to harness the growth of air racing globally through this partnership with the exciting new international series, the Air Race 1 World Cup, to introduce true air racing to many new audiences.”
